Legaltech is in the air! A estas alturas parece obvio que la aplicación de tecnología en la prestación y comercialización de servicios legales no es flor de un día.

Centrándonos en España, y solo por nuestra parte, en cuestión de un año hemos ayudado a mapearla y categorizarla, co-organizamos el primer evento nacional sobre ello y recientemente hemos comenzado a hablar de ella en profundidad en Legaltechies, nuestra área especializada para analizar el mundo de la tecnología legal y ayudar a quien lo necesite en su implementación.

Pero es que la Legaltch en España ha crecido mucho en este periodo: hay varias aceleradoras en la materia, competiciones, hackathons, asociaciones y más de un centenar de proyectos en marcha. Si vamos más allá y miramos al exterior, Legaltech es una tendencia con enorme empuje ahora mismo en el sector.

Por tanto, que algo se mueve en cuanto a tecnología legal es más que evidente.

Por qué la Legaltech de código abierto tiene sentido

Sin embargo, algo quizá no tan obvio está comenzando a ocurrir. Para un abogado unipersonal o pequeño despacho (la mayoría del sector, en verdad), el acceso a Legaltech va a tener al menos dos importantes barreras: el nivel de conocimiento y el coste de la tecnología.

Por un lado, el profesional legal desconoce todavía muchas de las herramientas y servicios Legaltech que aparecen casi a diario, no hablemos ya de sus características o utilidad. Algo que puede acabar generando una significativa barrera de conocimiento en el medio-largo plazo entre unos profesionales y otros. Por otro lado, el coste para acceder a estas herramientas o servicios es normalmente demasiado alto para el abogado independiente o alguien que se está iniciando en la profesión. Todo ello puede acabar generando fracturas digitales importantes en el sector legal.

A su vez, cuando hablamos de tecnología en otras áreas o ámbitos de conocimiento, existen muchos ejemplos de software propietario al igual que lo hay de código abierto. Que eso ocurra en la Legaltech también tiene sentido. Después de todo, la Legaltech de código abierto podría facilitar el acceso a la tecnología a muchos profesionales legales, a la vez que reduce la barrera del conocimiento o mejora la seguridad de las herramientas legales.

Sin embargo, la Legaltech de código abierto hoy en día es casi inexistente quitando algunas iniciativas en materia de datasets o el anuncio de Lex Predict respecto su sistema para revisar contratos, ContraxSuite.

Por ello pensamos que la Legaltech de código abierto, Open Legaltech que lo llamamos, una área interesante a la que merece la pena dedicar tiempo y dedicación, sobretodo ahora que todo se está iniciando.

Jade, un gestor de clientes y asuntos de código abierto para pequeños y medianos despachos

Un ejemplo práctico de este concepto de “Open Legaltech” sería Jade, un software para la gestión de clientes y asuntos para pequeños y medianos despachos, al igual que abogados unipersonales. Con esta herramienta un abogado puede gestionar clientes, casos y documentación relacionada de forma sencilla y con múltiples opciones. Que el código sea abierto significa que el abogado puede descargarla gratuitamente, inspeccionar el código, instalarlo en su propio servidor o integrarlo con otras herramientas Legaltech.

Algunos detalles sobre Jade, que lanzamos inicialmente a modo de preview, y sus funcionalidades: puede funcionar como repositorio digital de casos, sus documentos y la actividad relacionada con el mismo, se puede emplear para controlar el tiempo invertido en una tarea, presenta una interfaz sencilla de usar, funciona tanto en escritorio como para móvil, es seguro y escalable y se puede personalizar por completo. En cualquier caso, y como buena preview, Jade todavía se encuentra en versión alfa, el nombre no es definitivo y es una denominación interna de desarrollo, para instalarlo hace falta más que un simple doble clic, todavía está únicamente en inglés y hay docenas de detalles por finalizar. Pero ya que los responsables de este proyecto hablaremos de él la próxima semana en la Legal Geek Conference de Londres, pensábamos que era un buen momento para levantar el telón e ir recogiendo el primer feedback.

Para quien tenga curiosidad sobre el origen y desarrollo del proyecto, la idea de Jade surgió por allá Junio de 2016 cuando tuve la oportunidad de conocer a Vikram Vaswani, un desarrollador open source, autor y consultor en la materia que vive en la India y que se encontraba de visita en España. Hablando informalmente sobre las herramientas de código abierto disponibles para un abogado en su día a día, nos dimos cuenta que había muy pocas opciones. A partir de ese momento establecimos una serie de requerimientos comunes para el software más común que un abogado del mundo podría necesitar, un gestor de clientes – casos. Desde ese momento, Vikram y su compañero Harish iniciaron el desarrollo del proyecto en su tiempo libre. En este casi año y medio el diálogo y la colaboración ha sido regular para avanzar en Jade. De esta forma, mientras que yo aportaba el conocimiento sobre el sector, ellos sumaban sus habilidades tecnológicas y entre todos hemos creado una colaboración fructífera.

Y aunque ahora somos tres los que encabezamos el proyecto y únicamente podemos dedicar los ratos libres, queremos dar a conocer lo que hemos hecho hasta el momento para que más usuarios lo puedan probar, sugerir nuevas funciones e invitar a otros desarrolladores a que colaboren con su conocimiento.

Queremos crear una comunidad Legaltech de código abierto con diversidad de proyectos y herramientas. Jade es nuestro primer paso en ese objetivo.

Legaltech is in the air! At the moment, it seems rather obvious that the application of technology to the provision and commercialisation of legal services is not a flash in the pan.

In relation to Spain and just during the last year, we have mapped and categorised more than a hundred Legaltech projects. We also co-organised the first Congress about it and recently we opened a specialised area (in Spanish) to talk about it thoroughly and to help those interested in it.

But Legaltech in Spain also means accelerators, competitions, hackathons, associations and dozens of projects on the move. If we look beyond Spain, Legaltech is an enormous trend in the legal sector.

Therefore, it’s crystal clear that something is moving in the subject of legal technology.

Why Open Legaltech makes sense

However, something still not so obvious is just starting to happen. For a lawyer or a small law firm the access to Legaltech is going to have at least two important barriers: the level of knowledge and the cost of the technology.

On one hand, right now the usual legal professional is still unaware of all the Legaltech tools and services appearing everyday, more even about their features or usefulness. Something that can create a significant knowledge barrier in the medium-long term. On the other hand, the cost to access these tools or services is usually too high for a normal lawyer or someone who is just starting in the profession. Going beyond, all of that can create some significant digital fractures in the legal sector.

Additionally, when we talk about technology on other fields or areas of expertise, there are plenty of examples of proprietary software as well as open one. On the Legaltech field it also makes sense. After all, open source Legaltech could facilitate the access to technology to plenty of legal professionals, at the same time that reduces the knowledge barrier or improves the security of legal tools.

Nevertheless, open source Legaltech is nowadays almost none existent beyond some data sets or individual initiatives such as ContraxSuite from Lex Predict (we love it!).

That’s why we think that open source Legaltech, that we also call “Open Legaltech”, is an interesting area where it makes sense to spend time and effort, especially now that everything is just beginning.

Jade is case management for SME law firms

A practical example of this concept of “Open Legaltech” in action is Jade, an open source case management software for small and medium law firms and independent lawyers (the majority of the sector, in fact). With this tool, a lawyer can manage clients, cases and related documents easily and with plenty of options. The open source aspect means that a lawyer can freely download it, inspect the code, install on their own server or integrate it with other Legaltech tools.

Some details about the Jade preview and its features: it can work as a digital repository of case documents and activity. It can also be used for time recording and reporting and with an easy to learn interface. Jade works on mobile and desktop and it’s secure, scalable and can be fully customised. For more information on the features, check out this overview slide deck and this Github code repository.

In any case, Jade is still in alpha, the name is just an internal code for development, it still requires more than a simple double click for its installation, it’s only in English yet and there are plenty of details to finish. But those of us collaborating on the project will meet and talk about it next week at the Legal Geek Conference in London and so we thought that it would be a good moment to raise the curtain and receive some initial feedback.

For anyone curious about the background of the project, the idea for Jade surfaced in May 2016 when I met Vikram Vaswani, an open source developer, author and consultant from India, when he was on a visit to Spain. We were casually chatting about open source tools for the legal profession and realized that there were very few open source options for lawyers in their daily work. I described a list of common requirements and Vikram, together with his friend Harish, started developing the tool as an open project in their spare time. Over the last year and half, we have continued our dialogue, and through a combination of my industry insights and their technology capabilities, we have forged a successful collaboration.

Although there are only three of us working on the project currently and we are able to work on it only during our free time, we are eager to spread the word about what we have done so far, get more users to try it or suggest features and invite other developers to contribute their expertise.

We want to see an open source Legaltech community with plenty of projects and tools available. Jade is our first step towards this goal.
